Term 1 Week 7

This week was the finishing up of the overall look at the piece. We branded the 'X's and 'O's on the nine blocks one at each end. Once they were branded we painted them in an oil base paint and also painted the base. (Pic 1) They were then left there to dry.

Term 1 Week 5

Since the start of our project some of the class have sped up and some have slowed down. At the start of this week we were given 1 piece of wood. Once cut these will slide together and into the slots already cut on the frame. These will act as dividers and divide the box into 9 squares. Once the piece of ply goes on the bottom it will be ready for the blocks to be made and go in.

To do this I:
~ Cut 4 pieces of timber that fit into the sliding holes on the frame
~ Then the four were placed halfway in each and marked on the timber were the cuts are to be made
~ Once the pieces were all marked I used a marking gauge to mark halfway down the wood.
~ I then cut down along the line using a tenon saw until it got to the mark from the marking gauge.
~ Then I used a chisel and mallet and hit down on both sides of the piece of wood until the scrap fell out
~ I then sanded down all the pencil markings ready to glue it together
~ Once all was ready I glued the pieces together (Pic 1) and into the frame (pic 2)

Term 1 Week 4

This week we have got our four side bits of wood. Since then, we have marked out with a pencil the cuts that will be needed to complete the box frame.  We have now cut out the finger joints and with a bit more of chiseling and sanding it has come together perfectly.

Here is a sketch up picture of what it looks like so far:
